Horse Mane Extensions: What They Are and How to Attach Them

Horse mane extensions work the same way as tail extensions — they add length and volume to a mane that has broken off, rubbed out, or simply never grew thick in the first place. Here is everything you need to know before you buy.

What are horse mane extensions?

Mane extensions are sections of horse hair that attach to your horse's existing mane, adding length and fullness. They are used before shows, photoshoots and clinics, or simply to even out a patchy mane while it grows back.

Types of mane extensions

Clip-in mane extensions use small clips that fasten to the existing mane hair. They go on and come off quickly — useful for photoshoots and one-off occasions.

Braid-in mane extensions attach by plaiting the extension into the mane, section by section. They are more secure and look more natural for competition work.

How to put in horse mane extensions

Step 1. Brush the mane thoroughly and section it from the poll down.

Step 2. Take a small section of the natural mane, create a tight braid, and use a braiding hook to pull the extension loop through the braid.

Step 3. Pass the braid tail through the extension loop to lock it. Release the surrounding hair to blend.

Step 4. Repeat down the length of the neck, spacing sections evenly.

The result should read as a continuous, full mane rather than a collection of visible attachments.

Colour matching for mane extensions

Colour is harder to match in mane extensions than in tail extensions, because the mane is seen up close and in variable lighting. Photograph the mane in daylight, against the neck, and send the photo to us before ordering. We will help you find the closest shade.

Care and removal

Remove braid-in extensions after exercise rather than leaving them in overnight. Brush from the bottom up, never pulling from the root — a detangler on the lengths makes this easier. Store extensions braided loosely in their breathable bag, away from sunlight and moisture.
